Student Guide in Germany:Public Transport

Dear students,
If you’re heading to Germany for a summer student job, it’s very important to know how to:

  • Use public transport and purchase a monthly ticket online,
  • Open an online bank account via Wise to receive your salary and pay for expenses.

โœ… How to buy a monthly public transport ticket via mobile app
In Germany, public transport tickets (buses, trams, subways, and regional trains) can easily be purchased through mobile apps. In addition to single-ride tickets, you can also buy a monthly ticket (Monatskarte), which is much more practical and economical for students.

๐Ÿ“ฒ Apps by city or region:

  • DB Navigator โ€“ For regional trains and intercity connections
  • BVG Fahrinfo โ€“ For Berlin
  • MVV-App โ€“ For Munich
  • VVS Mobil โ€“ For Stuttgart
  • HVV App โ€“ For Hamburg
  • Or the local public transport app of the city where youโ€™ll be staying

๐Ÿ“ How to purchase a monthly ticket:

  1. Download the app from Google Play or the App Store
  2. Register with your name, email, and password
  3. Enter a German address (temporary or work-related)
  4. Choose “Monatskarte” or “Deutschlandticket” (โ‚ฌ49) โ€“ this is a national monthly ticket valid across Germany for public and regional transport
  5. Select the start date for the ticket (usually from the 1st of the following month)
  6. Pay via bank card, PayPal, or Wise card
  7. The ticket will be available in the app and must be shown during ticket inspections

๐Ÿ“Œ Tip: The Deutschlandticket is valid on all local and regional lines across Germany (but not on high-speed trains like ICE/IC/EC). Itโ€™s a great option for students who travel frequently.
