What Is a German Tax Refund?

When you work in Germany, income tax is automatically deducted from your salary. This is called Lohnsteuer (wage tax).

The German tax system calculates your monthly tax as if you would earn the same amount for the entire year. But if you only worked for a few months — as many students do — you likely overpaid.

By filing a tax declaration, you can recalculate your actual tax liability and receive back what you overpaid. This is completely legal and encouraged by German authorities.

Good to know: You can claim tax refunds for the current year and up to 4 previous years, depending on your situation.

    Tax is deducted automatically

Your employer withholds income tax (Lohnsteuer) from every paycheck you receive

    Short-term workers often overpay

The German tax system is designed for full-year workers, so students working only a few months typically pay more than necessary

A tax return allows a refund

By filing a tax declaration (Steuererklärung), you can claim back the overpaid taxes

Refunds can be claimed after leaving

You don’t need to be in Germany to submit your application or receive your refund

How Much Can You Get Back?

The refund amount depends on several individual factors

Your refund is calculated based on:

    Duration of work
    Total income earned
    Amount of tax deducted
    Your tax class
Whether the work was seasonal or long-term

Many students receive several hundred euros.

The exact amount always depends on individual circumstances and the decision of the German tax office (Finanzamt). We provide a realistic assessment based on your specific situation.

    Important Notice

We cannot guarantee specific refund amounts. The final decision is always made by the German tax authorities based on your individual case and applicable tax regulations.

What Information & Documents Are Needed?

To process your tax refund application, we’ll need some basic information and documents from your time working in Germany.
Personal details (name, date of birth, address)
Period of employment in Germany (from/to dates)
Approximate earnings during your work period
    Tax ID (Steueridentifikationsnummer) if available
    Salary statements (Lohnabrechnung or Lohnsteuerbescheinigung)
Bank account in EUR (IBAN) for receiving the refund

    Don’t Have All Documents?

If you’re missing some documents, don’t worry — we can still review your case and help you obtain the missing information.

We help you obtain missing documents
We work with approximate information when needed
Many students receive refunds even without complete paperwork
Free initial assessment of your specific situation

Tip: The most important document is your income certificate (Lohnsteuerbescheinigung or monthly Lohnabrechnung). If you have this, we can usually process your case smoothly.
